Larry May, Professor of Philosophy at Washington University (St. Louis), will be the Cole Scholar in Residence, October 11-13. May is the author and editor of numerous books and scholarly articles. His 2004 book, Crimes against Humanity : A Normative Account is the first of a trilogy with Cambridge University Press. The North American Society for Social Philosophy gave it their award for the best book in social philosophy that year. The second book (War Crimes and Just Wars), which will appear this fall, won the American Philosophical Association’s prize for best book on the philosophy of war and peace.

His main presentation on “Humanitarian Intervention” will come from the third book in the trilogy. This presentation will be at 11:00 am Friday, October 13 in Davis 130.

Alan Carter, Chair in Moral Philosophy, University of Glasgow (Scotland), will be the Cole Scholar in Residence, Nov. 3-9. He will give guest lectures to a number of classes; all are open to the university public. Carter assumed the Chair at Glasgow, having previously taught at the University of Colorado, the University of London, and the University of Dublin. He is author of numerous books including A Radical Green Political Theory, The Philosophical Foundations of Property Rights, and Marx: A Radical Critique. He is also author of numerous essays, and is currently co-editor of the Journal of Applied Philosophy.
