Cases

Sharon Taxman vs. Board of Education of the Township of Piscataway. U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled that a school's affirmative action policy was unconstitutional.
Schuette v. Bahm (2014) which upheld a Michigan referrendum which struck down all uses of affirmative action in that state. See Justice Sotomayor's scathing dissent that argues race still matters, and thus, only race conscious policies can deal with the effects of centuries of racism/
Smith, et al v. University of Washington (2000). Ruling that diversity is an adequate justification for public colleges to consider race in admissions. Upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court (May 28, 2001).
Steelworkers v. Weber (1979). U.S. Supreme Court held that voluntary, private affirmative action policies are not unconstitutional.
University of California Regents v. Bakke (1978) U.S. Supreme Court. The first decision that limited the range of permissible affirmative action programs.
